Bangladesh Announces 16-Man Squad for Pakistan Test series
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has unveiled a 16-player squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan, set to commence on August 21 at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. This announcement, made on Sunday, marks an important moment for Bangladesh cricket, as the series is part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. The stakes are high, and the selection panel has emphasized balance and experience in their squad choices.
The selection of the squad reflects the BCB’s strategy to blend experienced players with a robust pace attack, tailored for the challenges posed by the conditions in Pakistan. The National Selection Panel, led by Chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain, has made it clear that they are focused on fielding the strongest possible lineup to compete in this prestigious competition.
“Our primary focus was on assembling the best team for this version of the game. This squad is well-balanced, and we believe it gives us the best chance to succeed in Pakistan,” Hossain said. He underscored the importance of the veterans in the squad, noting, “The likes of Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque, and Shakib Al Hasan have collectively played 216 matches. Their experience is invaluable, and there is no substitute for what they bring to the team.”
The leadership mantle for this crucial series has been handed to Najmul Hossain Shanto, who will captain the side. Shanto has been a consistent performer for Bangladesh and is seen as a key figure in the team’s batting lineup. His leadership will be crucial in navigating the challenges that Pakistan’s bowling attack is likely to present.
One of the most notable aspects of the squad selection is the inclusion of five fast bowlers. This decision reflects the BCB’s awareness of the pitch conditions in Pakistan, which are expected to offer some assistance to the seamers. “We have selected five pacers mindful of the fact that Taskin Ahmed will only play the second Test,” Hossain explained. This strategic move suggests that Bangladesh is looking to cover all bases, ensuring they have the firepower needed to compete in a potentially pace-friendly environment.
Veteran fast bowler Taskin Ahmed’s inclusion in the squad, albeit only for the second Test, is another significant decision. Taskin has been a key player for Bangladesh in limited-overs cricket, but his last Test appearance was over a year ago, in June 2023. To help him regain his rhythm in the longer format, the selectors have arranged for Taskin to play in the Bangladesh A-Team during the second four-day game against Pakistan A. “He hasn’t bowled in a Test since June last year, and we have decided to include him in the A-Team for the second four-dayer against Pakistan A to get him into the rhythm for longer version matches,” Hossain added.
The squad also includes a mix of young talents and seasoned campaigners. Alongside the experienced trio of Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque, and Shakib Al Hasan, the squad features promising players like Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Zakir Hasan, who will be eager to make their mark in this high-profile series.
The full Bangladesh Test squad is as follows: Najmul Hossain Shanto (captain), Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Zakir Hasan, Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Kumar Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Nahid Rana, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, and Syed Khaled Ahmed.
On the other side, Pakistan has also announced a formidable squad for the series, led by Shan Masood with Saud Shakeel serving as vice-captain. Their squad includes notable names such as Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Sarfaraz Ahmed, among others, making it a tough challenge for Bangladesh.
The series schedule is as follows:
1st Test: August 21-25, Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.
2nd Test: August 30 to September 4, National Bank Stadium, Karachi.
As the teams prepare to face off, both sides will be aiming to secure crucial points in the World Test Championship standings. For Bangladesh, this series represents an opportunity to showcase their growth as a Test-playing nation, while Pakistan will be looking to leverage home advantage and their experienced lineup to claim victory. The cricketing world will be watching closely as these two teams clash in what promises to be an exciting and competitive series.
