Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Discuss South Asia Tensions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a phone conversation on Monday to discuss the evolving situation in South Asia.
This marked their second telephonic discussion within a week, as confirmed by a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The prime minister expressed appreciation for the UN chief’s continued engagement and diplomatic efforts, welcoming his calls for de-escalation and avoidance of conflict.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s proposal for an independent, transparent, neutral, and credible investigation into recent developments, Prime Minister Shehbaz voiced concern over India’s failure to present any evidence, while continuing with provocative statements and war rhetoric.
He emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering resolve to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Additionally, the prime minister raised serious concerns over India’s attempts to politicize international financial institutions in a bid to damage Pakistan’s economic interests.
During the conversation, Secretary-General Guterres updated the prime minister on his diplomatic outreach aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region. He reiterated his commitment to remain actively engaged with all stakeholders.
UN Chief Urges Caution Amid Rising Tensions
Earlier in the day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on both Pakistan and India to exercise “maximum restraint” as tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors escalate.
Describing the current state of relations as reaching a “boiling point” and the most volatile in years, Guterres warned that any military confrontation could rapidly spiral out of control.
He stressed the importance of de-escalation at this critical moment, urging both sides to pull back from the brink of conflict.
