In a major development following the exposure of corruption and illegal recruitment in Karachi University (KU), Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah has ordered the dismissal of the university’s Controller of Examinations, Zafar Hussain, and the Registrar. The action came in response to reports highlighting unlawful appointments to key positions without the formation of a high-level committee or any formal scrutiny process.

The revelations, brought forward by student political activists, pointed to deep-rooted irregularities in the hiring process, terming it unconstitutional and a serious blow to meritocracy in one of Pakistan’s leading public universities.

Karachi University, once a beacon of higher education, is now being described as being under the grip of a “mafia” that has significantly damaged its credibility and students’ futures. Once boasting a 99% admission rate, the university now sees enrollment numbers plummet to a worrying 30%, raising alarm among stakeholders and educationists alike.

Student leaders submitted formal complaints to various departments, urging swift and decisive action. In response, CM Murad Ali Shah was praised by student political organizations for addressing the crisis and acting against those undermining the education system.

A representative of one student group remarked, “CM Murad Ali Shah is an educated and visionary leader who understands the challenges students face. His action gives hope for a better academic environment.”

They further warned that corrupt practices in educational institutions will not be tolerated and vowed to continue their struggle against elements that threaten students’ futures. “Wherever there is corruption and injustice in the education sector, we will raise our voices and stand up for reform,” the student leader declared.
