Sindh Governor calls for Karachi-issued licenses for heavy vehicle drivers.

Date:

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has proposed that all heavy vehicle operators in Karachi must possess a driving license issued in the city.

KARACHI: Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori condemned the tragic traffic accident that occurred today, where a dumper fatally struck citizens, highlighting the alarming frequency of such incidents over the past two months. Tessori revealed that he had previously raised concerns about this issue with IG Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, and is now formally addressing the matter in a letter to both IG Sindh and DIG Traffic.

The governor pointed out that heavy vehicles such as trucks and dumpers in Karachi are often operated by drivers from other provinces who lack familiarity with the city’s traffic rules. He further alleged that many of these drivers are highway operators, some of whom drive under the influence of drugs.

Tessori called for stricter regulations and urged that drivers without Karachi-issued licenses be prohibited from operating heavy vehicles in the city. He expressed concern that such accidents are predominantly occurring in Karachi, exacerbating feelings of neglect and deprivation among its residents.

The governor also emphasized the need for strict timing regulations for dumpers and called for immediate action to prevent further tragedies.

Earlier today, two people lost their lives, and three others were injured in a series of road accidents across Karachi.

In one incident on Shaheed-e-Millat Road, two motorcyclists were struck by a speeding car, causing them to lose control and fall. A tanker truck following the car failed to stop in time, running over the fallen motorcyclists and dragging them before coming to a halt. Both motorcyclists died on the spot, while another person was injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The police have since detained the tanker driver.

In a separate accident on Shahrah-e-Faisal, two vehicles collided, leaving two women injured. Rescue teams quickly arrived to provide medical assistance.

According to rescue services, nearly 9,000 traffic accidents were reported in Karachi in 2024, resulting in 771 deaths and injuries to 8,174 citizens.
