Government to Hire Consultant for Starlink and LEO Satellite Projects
ISLAMABAD: The federal government is set to appoint a consultant to finalize regulations for Starlink, the satellite-based internet service owned by US billionaire Elon Musk, as well as other Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite projects in Pakistan.
The decision was revealed during a meeting chaired by Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Sheeza Fatima Khawaja, focused on advancing satellite connectivity and technology in the country.
Representatives from SUPARCO, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board participated in the session, discussing Starlink’s licensing progress and the development of a regulatory framework for LEO satellites.
It was agreed during the meeting to hire a consultant within weeks to facilitate the licensing process for Starlink and LEO satellites, ensuring Pakistan’s satellite policies align with global standards.
The participants also explored the potential of LEO satellites to enhance connectivity and drive technological advancements across the nation. The IT Ministry reiterated its commitment to establishing a regulatory framework that adheres to international benchmarks.
The meeting followed confirmation from the state minister that Starlink had been registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). “The Space Board Authority is examining various technical aspects, and we have communicated this to Starlink,” she told Geo.tv.
The IT minister also noted that a comprehensive regulatory regime is being developed to welcome all LEO satellite companies, including Starlink, ensuring a level playing field for international operators.
Just days earlier, Musk stated on social media platform X that he was awaiting Pakistan’s approval to launch Starlink’s services in the country, responding to messages from a Pakistani social media activist.
