Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani has said the provincial government will seek consensus among all stakeholders before finalising the Sindh Labour Code 2024, with protection of workers’ rights remaining a priority.
He was speaking at a meeting with representatives of various labour unions at his office on Saturday. Labour Secretary Sajid Jamal Abro, Labour Director Reju Mal, Director Sindh Social Security Waseem Jamal and labour representatives, including Habib-ud-Din Junaidi, Mirza Maqsood, Farhat Parveen, Liaquat Sahi, Hussain Badshah and Muhammad Saleem, attended the meeting.
The participants discussed various provisions of the proposed Labour Code, and clauses on which consensus had been reached were finalised.
Mr Ghani said the government wanted to formulate legislation acceptable to both workers and employers and would consult representative delegations of traders and industrialists before presenting the code to the provincial assembly.
He said Sindh had enacted more labour-related legislation than other provinces and claimed that the laws had been framed after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
Regarding the Labour Code, he said, no legislation would be finalised without taking the views of workers and employers into consideration.
The minister said the Pakistan Peoples Party government would continue to protect workers’ rights in accordance with the political legacy and stated vision of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.
He announced that a meeting with a representative delegation of employers would be held within the next two to three days to discuss the proposed code and take them into confidence.
Mr Ghani said the Labour Code would be sent to the assembly only after completion of the consultation process with all stakeholders.
